Canyon Creek Installs Innovative Hang Tray Finish System

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 10, 2008, Canyon Creek Cabinet Company proudly unveiled its latest equipment installation: The Pater Noster. Made in Italy, the Pater Noster is a sophisticated pivoted tray conveyor finishing system.
Canyon Creek's is the first in the U.S. and the largest in the world—190 feet long and 14 feet wide—with 140 trays attached to a chain that serpentines around a series of gears. The gears lead the 4' x 12' trays to 11 different manned stations, each with an electronic "finishing recipe" associated with the cabinetry parts on the tray. When a tray arrives at each of the stations, a computer screen at that station will highlight which portion of the recipe is to be completed there.
The 11 different stations are set up to perform the following finishing processes: loading product, staining, sanding, glazing, applying seal and topcoat, and quality control and inspection. After the trays leave each station, the chain and gears convey them overhead where they will pass through heated zones to cure the seal and topcoats.
The Pater Noster will be dedicated to finishing all the miscellaneous cabinet accessories, and the large trays will allow for most of the accessory parts for a given job to be kitted and finished together. Kitting the accessories for one job together will allow for better organization of the finished products.
According to David Wittekind, senior research engineer for Canyon Creek: "Working with three international contractors has been very educational and rewarding for Canyon Creek. Bringing this level of automation to a department that had otherwise been very manual and labor-intensive will greatly improve our processing efficiency, overall color quality and consistency from job to job."
