Canyon Creek Earns Washington State Environmental Honors

Monroe, WA - November 2008

Canyon Creek Cabinet Company was recently chosen for a 2008 Governor’s Award for Sustainable Practices. The award was based upon their comprehensive efforts to incorporate sustainable practices throughout their operations and years of commitment to the reduction of waste and toxic chemicals.

Canyon Creek had previously won the Governor’s Award in 1999. A panel of pollution-prevention experts and representatives from business, labor, governmental groups and academia made the award selection from a group of 31 contenders.

According to Canyon Creek president Bill Weaver: “This is truly a prestigious award and one that we are very proud to receive. We would not have won this award had it not been for the hard work of John Earl, our environmental manager, Bryan Jarvis, our director of manufacturing, Mike Jackson, our director of engineering, and Roger Felton, our AKZO/Nobel representative, as well as numerous employees throughout our plant.”

For the past 10 ten years, Canyon Creek has been recognized by state and local agencies for its environmental efforts, including having won the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Evergreen Award for Environmental Excellence. In 2006, Canyon Creek was the first cabinet company awarded the KCMA’s Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) certificate. The ESP is the only environmental certification program that specifically focuses on kitchen and bath cabinets.

Canyon Creek continually works with the Snohomish County PUD to find ways to save energy. It was the first business to sign on to the Lean and Environmental pilot program with the Washington Department of Ecology and Washington Manufacturing Services to streamline processes and reduce waste. Canyon Creek also worked with the Pollution Prevention Resource Center to find and use the latest techniques and tools for training in finish spraying.

The company constantly implements new processes and technologies to reduce waste streams. For example, the latest improvements the company implemented has eliminated 69,000 pounds of toxic material per year, saved more than a half million kilowatts of energy each year, saved 40,000 gallons of water, and cut more than half a million pounds of waste.
