As corny as they sound, New Year’s resolutions give us a chance to get organized and reinvent ourselves for the better. Now that the holidays are over, here are four things you can do to rejuvenate you and your home as you get ready to welcome 2018.
1. Post holiday downsize
This is one for the entire family! As you make room for new gifts in closets and cupboards, try this “One for Three Rule.” For every one new gift your family puts away, they must fill three bags to give away as a donation. Remember to consider everything…even travel size or hotel sample shampoos and soaps that clutter up your bathroom drawers are perfect for your local shelter.
2. Label everything
Invest in a label maker and start using it by organizing your Christmas decorations. Next year you will be so happy you took the time to organize and label as you put everything away. Once you are all boxed up, find one spot to store all your holiday decor together. Now that you’ve practiced with your holiday decor, start using your label maker to organize everything. It is life changing!
3. A cleaner, neater home
80% of cleaning up is picking up stuff and returning it to where it belongs. Start “tidying up” by purging. By putting your house in order, it will positively impact all the areas of your life. Then make a renewed commitment to “picking up” as a family and spend 15 minutes together every night tidying up. As far as completing those weekly pesky chores, try designating days of the week for certain chores…laundry is Monday nights, bathrooms are Saturdays, etc.
4. Save money
Start by really analyzing your household budget. Look for areas you can cut back…do you really need Starbucks three times a week? Then decide as a family how much you can save and what you are saving for…a dream vacation, a car, a swimming pool? Then set up your bank account so the savings is automatic, and you don’t have to think about it.
