Memorial Day weekend is summer’s official kick off, and our first chance to really get outside, swim and bar-be-que. From decorations, to food, to cocktails, and even giving back, here are some of our favorite ideas for hosting an outstanding Memorial Day celebration.
It’s all about red, white and blue
When it comes to decorations, it’s a no brainer…patriotic is the way to go (plus you can reuse for the 4th of July!). Get creative by going beyond American flags and use red, white and blue wreaths, banners and balloons. Don’t forget to display your flag at half-staff before noon on Memorial Day.
The food: Stick to BBQ classics
This is the first weekend of summer after all, and you can bet everyone is craving their BBQ favorites. Juicy burgers, tasty hot dogs, creamy potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, grilled veggies and watermelon are all time favorites and options for your Memorial Day menu. Finish with yummy (and make ahead!) desserts, such as patriotic cupcakes and fudgy brownies.
Keep the drinks flowing
No summer BBQ is complete without a great beverage set-up. For everyone, consider strawberry, blueberry and mint infused water, or delicious sweet tea. It’s always fun to make a signature cocktail for your event. Something that is colorful and completely in line with your party theme…maybe something red, white and blue perhaps?
Do something honorable
Remembering those that gave their lives is a wonderful way to bring special meaning to your Memorial Day party. And since May is also Military Awareness Month, consider creating a collection box and then donate to a military-focused charity, or ask guests to make a donation instead of bringing food or drinks to the party.
