Tips for Easy Outdoor Entertaining

With May comes Memorial Day…the official first weekend of summer! Longer days and warmer nights all mean more opportunities to entertain outdoors. Here are six easy tips you can use to create memorable, yet simple outdoor parties.

1. Keep food simple

Some barbecue, salads, fresh fruit, and ice cold drinks are all anyone needs for a tasty meal. Or have fun with different types of skewers (meat or veggie) which are perfect for backyard get-togethers! The point is you can enjoy simple foods that still are fun and flavorful, and leave you time to relax and enjoy your guests.

2. Use the space

Set up tables in different areas of your yard to encourage your guests to move around. Drink stations in one area, and a dessert table or s’mores station in another. Umbrellas are another great way of defining your outdoor dining space and of course providing shade. You can even repurpose indoor furniture such as coffee tables, settees or rugs to create an outdoor living space.

3. Setting the Table

Either forgo the table cloth so you don’t have to worry about wind, or lay brown kraft paper down for a casual look that is fun too! Place mason jars with crayons on the table so guests can write messages or doodle. Use cushions on the chairs so guests sit and relax long after the meal is over. As for simple, yet beautiful centerpieces, cut flowers from your garden such as gardenias, fill a small bowl with water and use as floating centerpieces.

4. Lighting

How you light up a backyard can really make a difference in ambiance. Consider paper lanterns and tiny white lights to set the mood. Don’t forget to circle your backyard area with citronella candles to help with insects once night falls.

5. Get cozy

Adding a firepit to your yard will encourage guests to linger and chat. Surround your firepit with comfortable chairs and pillows, throw blankets, and maybe soft music to encourage conversation.
