As Father’s Day approaches and we get ready to celebrate that main man in our lives, you might be wondering how to wow him with a gift that really says “Dad, we appreciate you!” Why not got big this year by giving him what he craves…a room of his own. In fact realtors say they’ve been asked by men to search for homes with a separate snack kitchen, cigar lounge, a quiet napping room just for dad, and even room for a home brewery. And don’t underestimate the power of the garage…still tops on dad’s list of a space of his own complete with cabinets big enough to install a small fridge, storage for games, pool toys and tools, and a workbench.
So first off, do dads really need a place of their own? Men certainly seem to think so. According to one study of 2,000 men, 85% of them claim they would like to have their own space. So just like their mom counterparts, men are craving time alone…and the research seems to support this thinking. So are you ready to get inspired and give dad something he’ll never forget this year? Here are a few ideas that go beyond the man cave and give dad the room he will love.
Dad & His Best Friend
For the dad who loves his dog, create a room that is comfortable for dad and his dog. Find some doggy inspired decor (think wall art, sculptures, bookends, and books), and then enhance the space with a custom made doggie bed. Add a chair just for dad to relax in and maybe an ottomon for his pup. A custom media center could round out the space and could include a built-in area for a crate, or a feeding station.
Dads Who Read
So if you’ve got a bookworm for a dad, make him a literary space fit for a king. Imagine him sitting there on a comfy leather couch reading the paper or his favorite novel, surrounded by books. An at-home library is all about comfort, cozy and space to display books. Maybe even add a game table perfect for those times he wants to put a book down and play some chess or checkers. Modern task lighting makes reading in the evening easy, while a coffee beverage bar will make this is favorite place in the morning.
The Social Dad
Is your dad the kind of guy that knows the difference between a good whisky, bourbon, and rye? If your dad loves to have a good time, consider creating a sophisticated bar area that supports all his entertaining needs. If you have a basement or area in the garage (it’s a bar-rage!) , consider converting this to his very own pub complete with creative touches such as recycled beer can lighting, kegs for bar stools, custom cabinets and shelves to store and display his favorite barware, and of course a space for the big screen TV! And no bar is complete without a custom sign.
Dads You Can Bet On
Does your dad love a good poker night with his buddies? Take a gamble and give dad his very own poker room. Be sure to splurge a little and get him a top-of-the-line professional poker table. It’s the focal point of the room so don’t cut corners when it comes to the table. Then make sure you have comfortable seating. No matter what your style, almost everyone who creates a home poker room leans towards making sure they have comfortable seating. If you want to go big and have the space, add a built-in bar completed with bar stools, mini fridge and cabinets for storage. Then make sure you stock up on all the game necessities such as cards and chips, and don’t forget wall decor to set the mood. Consider framing the rules for popular poker games such as Texas Hold ‘Em or 5-Card Draw, or consider movie posters from movies that involved poker.
The Grilling & Chillin’ Dad
This isn’t any ordinary outdoor kitchen, this is dad’s place to grill and chill. And the fact of the matter is, any outdoor chef wants certain things in their kitchen. Start with a top of the line grill (maybe a smoker too!), cutting edge BBQ tools, a place to prepare food, and even a sink and mini fridge. Ideally there would also be a bar area where guests could sit down and chat while food was on the grill, good lighting, and music or a TV.
